Project Description:
Comprehensive renovation of one of Spring Lake’s oldest homes (circa 1900’s) and most important “Period Home”. Having withstood a century of exposure to the coastal extreme weather located within 2 blocks from the Atlantic Ocean, the clients had recognized the architectural heritage and were committed to the redesign and restoration of the this Grand Dame' of homes!

The scope of the renovation, consisted of the (gut-rehab) renovation of all structural, mechanical, electrical and exterior envelope. In addition to designing an updated room layout on all floors which was sympathetic to the grand room proportions of the original plan, much of existing wood frames structure had to be re-engineered to correct structural failures as well as comply with code requirements in place a century after the original structure was built!

The implementation of a renovation of the exterior required a thoughtful approach to the architectural elements and a reintroduction of materials and systems of current use! Rebuilding the recessed /concealed roof drainage systems. The Porte cochere’ represented an example of updating an architectural icon which was visually important yet was not code compliant. The original stairs lacked the level of function and grace that a home of this scale deserved. As a result of in depth studies and design reviews, the design team “rethought” the stairs which evolved into the dramatic flying curves that float within the 3 level stair tower!
