'Sumer Wind'- Spring Lake
Located within a short walk from the Atlantic Ocean, this new 8,000 SF square foot custom house was commissioned by a client asked for a 'traditional home' which would fit well within a neighborhood with many victorian homes which were built in the early 1900's.
The site was a narrow (100 x 150) lot located on a prominent corner in Spring Lake, with ocean views as well as adjacency to many of the regions finest Period Style homes. The inspiration for this updated “Seashore-Colonial” comes from a compilation of Spring Lake’s sprawling Victorian structures.
Like other coastal villages along the Atlantic Coast, Spring Lake has managed to preserve several of the “Grand Victorian’s” built by the craftsman designer/builders of the early 1900’s, which have survived a Century of harsh coastal weather and often neglect since they were primarily Summer Homes. Despite the ever present threat of the wrecking ball, an emerging class of affluent families eagerly seek the opportunity to acquire historical homes, which have become a very limited offering.
As a result, there is a great deal of interest in designing/building the “Vintage” homes of yesteryear embellished with the grandeur and architectural heritage of the Period Homes, as well as the technology and vast array of home furnishing options.
Consider a first visit to this home as one drives through the columned 'Porte-Cochere' drive thru structure and steps up onto the porch with a crisp scent of the Ocean. This distintive element provices a meaningful way to revisit an era of grand scale where the experience of “arrival” was as important as the journey getting somewhere.
The broad wrap around covered porch with seating pavilions offers an outdoor private space, which are Summer havens for reading, family gatherings or after beach relaxation. The floor decks are finished in mahagony that sets well against the white cedar shake siding,
This home includes many traditional room layouts and settings with large kitchens, storage closets, bathrooms, and open space with the myriad of electronic and technology in every room. The home features many 'vintage architectural' elements, such as a window seat above at the stair landing, bring sunlight across the interiors of the interconnected first level. Grand room proportions with high ceilings and large windows enhance scale of the public rooms, which all have ample entry arches, crown and base molding.
The lower level is complete with Game rooms, wine cellar, home theater, gym, and storage rooms. The second level offers a large master suite with terrace, as well as reading area, an additional 4 bedrooms with private baths and laundry room. The elevator serves each level including the penthouse, which offers ocean views from the (2) large private bedrooms, as well as the central and entertainment space.
